The Museum operated by the Allamakee County Historical Society in Waukon, Iowa has some interesting records from Co. Mail: P.O. Box 95, Waukon, Iowa 52172

Included in its collection is a complete set of the original Morning Reports (see below) for Co. B,

The Allamakee County Historical Society Museum in Waukon, Iowa also has the Co. B "Company Descriptive Book" (see below), which was recently located in a storage area of the museum.

The museum has an exhibit that includes a letter dated April 13, 1864 from Lt. Samuel O. Smith to Capt. Samuel W. Hemenway of Co. B, reporting on the condition of himself and Sgt. George W. Griswold, who were both wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on April 9, 1964.  The letter also mentions Lt. Frank A. Brush of Co. K, 27th Iowa Infantry, who was also wounded and taken prisoner.

Another Exhibit is General Order No. 25 issued by Col. James I. Gilbert of the 27th Iowa Infantry dated May 25th, 1863 regarding his concern for gambling within the ranks.

I will enclose the text of these items and all related information that I have.

The museum may have other civil war records or personal papers in its collection. I will try to find out what is available and report on anything that might be of general interest.

Morning Reports for Co. B

The Allamakee County Historical Society Museum in Waukon, Iowa has a complete set of the original  MORNING REPORTS for Co. B, which include five paperbound volumes covering these time periods:

October 1962 to May 1863
May 1863 to January 1864
February 1864 to September 1864
October 1864 to June 1865
July 1865

There is also one leather bound volume covering the period October 1862 to January 1865.   This volume appears to be a summary of the five paper bound volumes.

The morning reports list the current duty station on each date, the number of officers and enlisted men of each rank available for duty, account for those who are not on duty by reason of sickness, casualty, etc.  The monthly "remarks" section contains brief information about specific soldiers who are on leave, AWOL, wounded, sick, hospitalized, taken prisoner, returning to duty, engagements, etc.

The museum also has Co. B's account books in several small bound volumes that account for the financial transactions of the company.

Co. B Descriptive Book

The Allamakee County Historical Society Museum in Waukon, Iowa also has the Co. B "Company Descriptive Book", which was recently located in a storage area of the museum.

This book lists all company personnel and was apparently begun when the company was first mustered. When additional personnel were mustered into the company at later dates, their names and personal information were added. The book was supplemented to record events as they occurred.

Information in the book includes the following sections:

  1. Descriptive Roll of Company, including date mustered, residence, age, height, complexion, eye and hair color, place of birth, occupation, who enlisted them.
  2. List of commissioned and non-commissioned officers.
  3. List of Transfers.
  4. Register of Deaths.

These sections also have a space provided called "Remarks" which occasionally provides additional information about individual personnel.

I am hopeful that additional information will be located as time permits.
